Enchytraeids are small, often white, earthworms that live in soil, preferably where organic matter has accumulated. Similarly to other earthworms, they are important for decomposition of dead plant material. In washed up seaweed on beaches, the species, Enchytraeus albidus, is found, which we use as a model for freeze-tolerance. This species can be found in large densities, and we are exploring the possibility of mass-producing them for use as feed for fish or poultry. Like other earthworms, they contain much protein and are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids
